memory of Hadrian, one of Raphael Konopnicki

Hadrian and the college Matisse

Tuesday was for me the day of a new journey of memory initiated by the General Council at Auschwitz. Always impeccably organized by Eric Goldinger and services was, for me, the eighth. But none of these trips is unlike previous ones. Tuesday was, among other things, the tour of Hadrian, the son of Emmanuel, schoolboy to Matisse, and one of eighteen students from Vernier, highly motivated by Ms. Rosario, their principal, who had made the trip.

To me, these minutes were moving where in the name of Maralpins, I filed a wreath at the memorial with my colleague Lorrenzi, Mayor Sospel, and those where I, once again, found the name of my grandfather, in the tragic listing of residents of the camp.

This day was also that of a cruel and cold: - 10 degrees with the wind Silesian which pierced our clothes, our way of understanding how the body Polish winter was a nightmare for the prisoners dressed Pajama their bad canvas.

What we did not know is that the day after our visit, a major figure in the Resistance was Riviera extinguished. Indeed, February 16, Raphael Konopnicki has left us. Under the name of Edward Voisin, hidden from the beginning of the war in a small apartment in Nice with his family, he soon became head of the clandestine printing Valrose before being appointed Commander FTP. In this capacity he will lead the battle for the Liberation of Cannes and the hinterland. And when peace returned, it was time for Raphael, like many Jews of France to the death toll of his missing relatives in Auschwitz ...
